The key differences between CBD oil and hemp seed oil

As more and more pet owners explore plant-based remedies to support their pet’s health and wellness, two products often come to mind—CBD oil and hemp seed oil. While these terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they are not the same thing. Misleading marketing and misinformation often blur the lines between the two, but they have distinct origins and uses.

It’s essential for vets and pet owners to understand the differences, especially when it comes to the wellbeing of their furry companions. In this post, we’ll break down the key differences and help you make informed choices for your pet’s health.

Source and extraction

CBD oil can be extracted from the flowers and leaves of the Cannabis Sativa plant. These parts contain high levels of cannabidiol (CBD).

CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) of the body which functions to maintain homeostasis. Read more about CBD, THC and the endocannabinoid system here. CBD provides various therapeutic benefits, including pain relief, reduced inflammation, improved mood, better sleep, and regulation of the immune system.

Hemp seed oil, on the other hand, is derived from the seeds of the Cannabis Sativa plant. The seeds are cold-pressed to extract a nutrient-rich oil, which does not contain any phytocannabinoids.

Chemical composition

CBD oil contains phytocannabinoids, primarily cannabidiol (CBD), as well as other compounds like terpenes and flavonoids, which have a variety of medicinal properties.

Full spectrum CBD oils contain not only CBD, but an array of compounds that are found naturally in the cannabis plant, including minor cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and trace amounts of THC (though not enough to cause an intoxicating effect). When combined, these compounds work together in what’s known as the entourage effect. This theory suggests that the various compounds work together in a synergistic manner to enhance the overall therapeutic potential.

There are other types of formulation available, such CBD isolate (pure CBD), and your vet will prescribe the option which is most appropriate for your pet.

Hemp seed oil is rich in omega fatty acids and also contains protein, fibre and a range of nutrients. It does not contain CBD, THC, or any other phytocannabinoid so it does not provide any therapeutic benefit. Hemp seed oil is considered to be a healthy nutritional supplement.

As there are no active ingredients in hemp seed oil, it may be used as a carrier oil for CBD extract. However, MCT (medium chain triglycerides) oil is usually the carrier oil of choice as it is thought to yield the best results in the body.

Benefits and uses for pets

CBD oil is gaining popularity in the veterinary space for its therapeutic properties, which include:

  1. Pain relief: CBD can help manage chronic pain, including conditions like osteoarthritis and cancer in pets. It is also used in palliative care for pets nearing end-of-life. You can read about how CBD can be helpful for chronic pain in pets here

  1. Anxiety reduction: Many pet owners use CBD to help their pets cope with separation anxiety, fear of loud noises, or other stressors. See what the research says about how CBD can be used to treat anxiety in pets here

  2. Seizure control: Studies have shown that CBD may reduce the frequency and severity of seizures in pets with epilepsy. There is recent evidence supporting the use of CBD as an add-on therapy for dogs with seizures

  3. Anti-inflammatory effects: Pets with autoimmune diseases or inflammatory skin conditions may benefit from CBD’s potent anti-inflammatory effects. A common condition which affects many dogs is atopic dermatitis—you can read about how CBD may help this condition here

Hemp seed oil is primarily used as a nutritional supplement for pets and offers the following benefits:

  1. Skin and coat health: The omega fatty acids and other nutrients found in hemp seed oil help keep your pet’s skin moisturised and their coat shiny.

  2. Joint support: Hemp seed oil is believed to act as a lubricant for the joints, supporting movement and mobility in ageing pets. The healthy fats may also help reduce joint inflammation.

  3. Heart and brain health: Omega fatty acids are believed to aid in heart health and brain function.

Conclusion: which should you choose for your pet

The choice between CBD oil and hemp seed oil depends on your pet’s health needs. If your pet is dealing with chronic health issues like pain, seizures, or anxiety, consult your vet about whether CBD oil might be a suitable treatment. If you’re looking for a nutritional supplement to support your pet’s skin, coat or joints then hemp seed oil may be a useful option.

Both CBD oil and hemp seed oil products offer unique benefits, but it’s important to use them for the right reasons and under the appropriate circumstances. Always consult your vet to ensure you’re making the best decision for your pet’s health and wellbeing.
